I booked with intensive the day I returned from a holiday where we relied on a car, and I realised how vital having a car is sometimes. But as I am in my final year of medical training, I knew I could only afford a maximum of 2 months of time to dedicate to learning.

I rang intensive and managed to book an instructor for 2 days time. In 5 days from ringing Intensive, I had my theory test, and then 2 months later I had my first and only practical driving test, which I passed.
Every time I had to ring Intensive they were so friendly and endearing.

Also, I could not have asked for a better instructor than Gary. To get me from never having sat behind a wheel of a car (and no experience of family members driving), to passing my first driving test in 2 months is amazing. He knew the right amount of lessons I needed and taught me in a way that was perfect for me. He was also flexible to work around my long and busy timetable and fit me in where ever he could. He also was a good laugh, which made the whole experience of learning to drive a very fun and enjoyable one!

Top 10 Tips for learning in N7 Holloway

Where is the best quietest place to start your lessons from?

Just off the Holloway Road you have a few side streets notably Dalmeny Road turning right onto Carleton Road then right onto Tabley Road, also around Cardwell Road is a great place to get to do the basic manoeuvres.  The best place to practice in London is around Arlington Square, there are lots of wide roads where most of the other cars are learner drivers. You can get up to third gear and practice lefts and right turns. 

What are the speed limits on the roads? 

There are mostly 20 mph on the side roads and the larger roads are mostly 30 mph, there are no roads in the area that go above 30 mph.

Are there many big or small roundabouts in my area?

Very few roundabouts in the area but if you’re looking to practice roundabouts I would suggest heading up towards Highbury and Islington roundabout, it’s a small roundabout but can get busy with traffic heading towards Holloway. For Larger roundabouts then heading down to Old Street roundabout. Bear in mind that you are on the edge of the congestion zone.

Are there any dual carriageways?

The A1 going to Holloway heading out of town. Heading towards North London you have the A41 towards Hendon, Mill Hill.

What are the best times during the day to do your driving lessons?

It gets busy around rush hour times but if you go in the opposite direction to the traffic you should still be able to get a lot of driving done. In the mornings it’s busy heading into Central London and in the evening it’s busy heading out from London. Holloway Road is one of the busiest roads in London.

Are there any busy/difficult/unusual junctions?

Most of the main roads get busy, none of the roads in the area are difficult. Keep a check on the bus lane times as by entering them when your not supposed to will land you with a fine.

Are there any places to practice bay parking? 

There are not many places to practice except in housing estates. 

Which are my nearest theory test centres?

The nearest theory test centres are Southgate,  Mile End which has 3 centres A , B and C, Then there is London Bridge (Southwark) theory test centre.

Where is my local practical test centre?

There are 6 DVSA practical test centres not too far away, Tottenham, Wood Green, Mill Hill, Hendon, Barnet and Borehamwood.

Which is the easiest test centre to do your practical driving test in my area?

All test centres are the same. If you’re not a fan of roundabouts then Wood Green and Tottenham have fewer roundabouts on the test routes but if you are going to do your test in either Wood Green or Tottenham make sure you practice the Great Cambridge Roundabout from all directions.  In Hendon and Mill Hill test centres there is a good chance you will go onto the A41. Borehamwood test centre has lots of small roundabouts and Barnet has country roads to contend with.
