We get lots of calls from people looking for driving lessons for older adults. These tend to be adults learning to drive when older, who are in their mid-twenties, the thirties and even older over 50s and 60s, wondering if it is too late to learn to drive. They need a driving licence ASAP.
Most of them tried learning to drive when the were 17 or 18 years old but it didn’t work out for them. They then had to go to university, ran out of money for the lessons or just didn’t get on with their driving instructor at that time. These calls come mostly from the cities with good transport links, notably London.
When you are learning to drive in London, I would suggest if you have a few moments to pop into one of the many driving test centres. What you will see are mostly people in their mid-twenties and thirties waiting for the driving test examiner to take them on their driving test.

Most people learning to drive are in their twenties and even much older in London. In London is not uncommon to see people in their fifties learning to drive.
There is a myth that when you are learning to drive as you get older you will need more lessons than someone in their teens. This is not always the case. In over the 25 years that I have been teaching people to drive, I have not seen this. Everyone learns at different rates, it has nothing to do with how old you are. As most people get older they tend to be less excitable and steadier. This helps when learning to drive. As an older driver, you are generally learning because you need a licence. By needing a driving licence you will be more determined to learn and pass the first time.
Once you have passed your driving test according to the association of British insurers you will be much safer on the roads than younger drivers who have just passed, check out the following link: ABI Guide.
The main reasons are older drivers in their mid-twenties and thirties are more aware of the dangers on the road. There is also a good side effect of learning to drive when older as your driving insurance tends to be much cheaper than that of a seventeen-year-old. Secondly, older learner drivers tend to buy or get a company car so they can keep up with driving and do not get rusty. This will keep you safer on the roads.
So don’t feel like you are too old to learn to drive, you are never too old, there are many people out there in the same position as you and they are learning to drive and getting their driving licence.
